NOTICE! Saturday Pratice change!

Hello Birds,

Okay, sorry for the last minute notice, but things this weekend are crazy and I was trying to hold out for the weather. However, it doesn’t look like the schedule (mine and the small gym) are going to match up this Saturday and it appears it’s never going to stop raining, so the outside option isn’t going to work this weekend.

So here’s our plan for tomorrow (Saturday, Dec 8th). We would like all pitchers and catchers to report to the small gym from 11am – 12:30. We would like anyone that has pitched or caught in the past or anyone that has ANY desire to do so. Milt will be working with the girls to get their reps in and training some of the younger ones. We desperately need depth in pitching and catching. If you are interested, get there and give it a try. If you are someone that has an interest in exploring pitching to a greater degree, I would recommend taking private lessons on the side. We can assist with finding trainers. But Milt has enough knowledge to assist our current pitchers with their reps and training the younger pitchers the fundamentals they can build on. Pitching can go a long way for girls that can throw strikes and build velocity as they get older.

To recap:

Pitchers and catchers report to the small gym from 11-12:30 tomorrow!

All other players, take the day off! You’re welcome, but don’t get used to it!

MONDAY

6-7 – fitness training

6:45 – 8 – Skills training.

Just another note…the girls have been working their tails off at practice. Between the fitness and skills, they have exceeded my expectations so far. All the coaches have been impressed with their dedication and focus. We are getting 20-25 girls there consistently! Last night we were practicing outside in the cold and rain and I didn’t hear one negative comment from any of them. They might have said it, but I sure didn’t hear it!! It will pay off. I bet there weren’t many teams in the state practicing outside last night! You should be proud of all of them. I want to thank the coaches too. Yes, we have some that get paid, but we also have two very dedicated assistant coaches. They deserve a ton of credit as well!

ATTENTION PARENTS!!!

Message from the Softball Parents Association:

"We have scheduled our first meeting of the Softball Parents Association (SPA) for December 4th at 7:00 PM in the Café at the High School"

The program and the girls really appreciate the support of the parents and this association. The group has already done a ton to help out the program and have many great ideas to keep up the support. If you can find the time, please support this group. All the benefits go back to your kids!!! We are looking to take this softball program to another level and that really starts with the families that are involved. We can’t do it without your support!

Updates!!

Hello Bluebirds!

The coaching staff is very happy and impressed with the turnout for the fitness and skill training. We are seeing the girls really make some strides in a short period of time. The girls seem to really be focusing and learning. Off season training is not glamorous and the reward is far off in the distance, but keep encouraging them and help us convince them that it will pay off! The season will be here before you know it!

Reminder! We have our first Saturday practice TOMORROW! (Dec 1st). The weather is expected to be beautiful for DECEMBER! We will be outside for the entire 2 hours and working on defensive skills. Please make sure the girls are there by 10:45. We need them stretched and ready to go by 11am.

We have a tricky schedule coming up for the next couple weeks. Please stay close to your email over the next month. Gym time in the dead of winter is hard to get and we will need to remain flexible through that time.

See ya tomorrow!!!!

Go Birds!

Thursday Skill Training

It’s supposed to be a decent day tomorrow (Thursday) and I have confirmed that we can get on the football field for a portion of the practice. I want to make sure the girls bring the appropriate clothing for being outside. Practice will be from 6-7:30 tomorrow.

ALSO
There was some confusion on what the girls should bring to practice. I said all they’d need is gloves. Sorry, I meant that as the “minimum”. They should bring anything they have to perform any fundamentals of the game. Glove, bat (if they have one. No need to buy one if you don’t. We have plenty), batting gloves, etc. That’s my fault!
As for batting gloves, I would recommend getting the girls batting gloves now, if they don’t have them. We will be doing a lot of swinging of the bat. Many were complaining about stinging and blisters already. We have a long way to go! The gloves will help both things. They don’t have to be expensive. I just want to make sure they are all getting the most out of the hitting and sometimes the stinging and blister divert attention away from learning.

Fitness Training Reminder:
Anyone signing up for fitness training, please remember along with the monthly charge, there will be an assessment fee also. That will be $25. I mentioned this at the “Meet the Coaches” meeting, but I have not talked about it since then. The assessment is an important part of the process. It will give us and you metrics on your daughter’s improvements and help her understand where she needs to work harder. Without measurements, you don’t get the full benefit of the program and you can’t see the results of their hard work. The assessment will be an initial benchmarking of key drills and workouts. We will gather the data as a benchmark. Then the girls will be tested periodically and the results recorded. There is time and analysis that goes into determining the results. Thus the reason for the assessment fee.

Bluebird Notes!

We had a good first session last night! The girls were very focused! They did a great job.

A few notes:

Training
Training Thursday will be from 6-7:30. This will be our time going forward. We can get enough done in that time and get them out of there a little earlier. I just ask that they are there, stretched and ready to go right at 6. If girls have their own bats, they are welcome to bring them to any of the skills training. Also, I told the girls to keep sweats in their bags or lockers at school. Anytime over the winter that we can get outside on the turf, we will. If we have a winter like last year, that could be pretty often. I won’t make them freeze, but we can’t be afraid of a little cool weather!

Checks for the fitness training should be made out to Mehgan Sebastian. I haven’t told folks this and I owed this to a few parents that asked last night. Fitness training will start in a couple weeks.

Videos
From time to time, I will run across videos to share with the girls. This is something the girls will be able to view at home and maybe try to incorporate it into their skills. Most of these will be things we are teaching them or examples of elite players doing the right things. I want the girls to look at them and study what’s going on in the videos. A picture is worth a 1000 words!

Here’s an instructional video on throwing. Even if your daughter has a good arm today, these fundamentals can help with accuracy and velocity. We talked a little about this last night. This is a baseball video, but translates to softball.

JV coach
We are still looking to fill the JV coach. Please help us spread the word. We are diligently looking for qualified candidates!

End of Summer update

Thanks to all the girls who participated in both the summer league and the Thursday practices.  I hope both were worthwhile experiences and helped you stay in touch with softball and work on your skills.  As I told several of the girls last week, I can see a noticeable improvement in a number of things.  I hope to be able to expand on this program next year.

As I told the girls, last week was the last of our summer practices.  With school starting this week, I decided now would be a good time for a break.  The school has not yet made a decision on the coaching staff for 2013, but hopefully that will happen soon.  Look for further information in early September.

Good luck in the new school year and keep your grades up!!

Tuesday Game CANCELLED

Sorry for the late notice, but Simon Kenton's coach has just informed that they can't play tonight, so the games are cancelled.

Since everyone was planning on being at the field, there will be an "open practice" from 5:30 - 7:00. We will work on one offensive and one defensive skill.

We are trying to reschedule this doubleheader for Thursday night (7/12).  Please email Milt at mhorner@us.ibm.com to let him know if you are available to play.

Banquet Recap

Thanks to everyone who came to the banquet last night.  We had some great recaps of each team's season!  Here is a quick recap of awards that were handed out last night and some announcements that were made.

Freshman Awards
Most Improved Player: Ella Grimm
Most Valuable Player: Lexie Conner

JV Awards
JV Miss Hustle: Brooke Dill
JV IronBird Award: Miranda Mason
JV Most Improved Player: KC Broering

Varsity Awards
Most Improved Player: Carly Hebel
Miss Hustle: Kendall Turner
IronBird Award: Haley Coffey
Most Valuable Offensive Player: Shelby Graybill
Most Valuable Defensive Player: Ashley Grosser
Miss Highlands Softball: Whitney Quillen
Most Valuable Player: Brooke Hollingsworth

Congratulations to all of the players on wonderful seasons, and to those who won awards - you earned it!  We will arrange a way to get all of the awards to the girls who missed the banquet (and team pictures for those of you who have not received them yet), so please keep checking back for an update.

Vince Turner and Matt Grosser spoke briefly about the Softball Parents Association that has been set up as a non-profit organization in conjunction with the softball team.  The biggest goal is to raise money for field renovations, but it will also serve as a fundraiser for team needs.  We HIGHLY encourage all parents to get involved.  Please email Matt or Vince (matt.grosser@kroger.com or vinceturner@fuse.net) so they have your email address and can keep you informed with what's going on.

Finally, Jake and I announced that we are expecting our first baby in January of next year.  While we'd love to coach the girls forever, we believe that it's in the best interest of the team and the program if we step down as head coaches.  We are meeting with Dale next week to discuss the future of the program, and will keep everyone informed on how the hiring process progresses.  It has been the greatest pleasure of our lives being with these girls every day for a short 3-4 months every year, and coaching this team has had an immeasurable impact on our lives.  We hope that you will remember us with fond memories as you look back on your time at Highlands!

Athletic Boosters Night at the Races

This is very important for the continual support from the Boosters.  Please read and contact Neil or Anissa to support this event!

Sat, 4-28-12 is the 3rd annual Highlands Athletic Boosters Association Night at the Races.  If you’ve never been, it’s a very fun night!  Unfortunately, it’s the same weekend as a Varsity tournament in Louisville, so we’re really asking all softball parents to help out in supporting this event, either by attendance or by sponsoring a horse for the event. Horses are $25 and could potentially be a big winner or even lucky loser, which also brings home a prize.  Tickets to the event are $15 each (in advance or $20 at the door).

Considering the amount of money the Booster’s have given the team, it would be great for the Softball teams (Freshman, JV & Varsity) to support this event.  The Booster’s approved $700 last month for equipment and the ‘Dolphin’ (cost was approximately $1500) was also purchased as a result of Booster’s money.  In the past several years, the Booster’s has given over $5000 to the softball program, compared to some other sports, the Booster’s have been very generous in purchases that the school district would otherwise not support.

In addition to the softball teams, the Booster’s has recently voted to support $50,000 towards the purchase of a new state of the art gym floor, which will be used by all HHS/HMS students, as well as the softball teams in the off-season.  This would not be possible without the support of the community and families such as you.

As our final year on the Booster’s Board, as graduating parents, we would like to encourage each of you to find a way to support the Booster’s, now and in the future.  In the past 4 years since we have been on the Booster’s Board, there has not been a request from the Softball coaches that hasn’t been granted, everything they have asked for has been approved!  If you’re attending the Varsity tournament, we could encourage you to sponsor a horse, or if $25 is too much, go in with another family and split it.  If you’re in town, please consider attending the event and possibly sponsoring a horse.  This is a very fun event, especially if you attend with other softball parents!  We hope there will be a great turnout of softball parents (to show our appreciation of their support).  Please contact Neil Hollingsworth #916-4159 or Anissa Hollingsworth #916-4158 in order to purchase a horse (Deadline is Wed, 4-18-12) or Wed, 4-25-12 to purchase reduced/advance tickets to the event.

Thanks for your consideration with this and your support of the Booster’s Organization.
