Softball Conditioning UPDATE

There will be NO CONDITIONING THIS WEEK due to the resurfacing of the small gym floor. We will resume conditioning on Monday, December 5th at 6:30pm.

Conditioning Time Change and Field Work Day

Just a reminder that starting on Monday 11/7, conditioning on every Monday and Thursday will be from 6:30-7:30pm instead of 6-7:30pm. This will continue for the remainder of sessions in 2011.

Also, depending on the weather, we are going to do some work on the field on November 19th. We will provide more information as the date approaches and we are able to determine if the field will be dry enough to get anything done.

Conditioning/Open Field Reminder

We will be starting conditioning THIS THURSDAY, September 29th at 6pm in the small gym. We had the opportunity to book the small gym on Mondays and Thursdays from 6-7:30pm, so those will be our conditioning/open field times until further notice. Please make sure your daughter brings her glove and any softball equipment she needs to practice to EVERY conditioning session. If there is an opportunity for us to use Death Valley or the main football field, we will definitely be taking advantage of that.

Fall Parents Meeting

Next Tuesday, September 13th at 7:15pm in the highschool cafeteria, we will be having a parents meeting for all parents of girls interested in playing softball this school year.

We will be discussing fall conditioning and practice as well as information about the 2012 season. At this time we plan to allow 5th grade students to tryout for the program, so any 5th grade parents whose children are interested in playing should definitely attend.

Weekend Schedule

Reminder for Friday hitting practice:

Varsity practice will start at 1:30. Practice will be about 2 hours long, but has the potential to run longer since we'll be prepping for postseason play.

Districts: May 23rd - 25th

We will be hosting the district tournament this year AT Highlands. In the past, the tournament has been held at NKU. Due to the rain this year, we do not want to share NKU's field with another district and try to reschedule make up games around another district's tournament. We're going to give it a shot and hope that it's easier to do it at our place than the regional tournament was at NKU several years ago.

That being said, we'll need some volunteers next week to help out with various activities at the school. We'll need two people to work the concession stand at each game. We'll also need an adult committed to doing the scoreboard for each game. We need to make sure that the ball/strike/out count is accurate for every pitch during the district tournament. We are also looking for someone to read the line-ups over the PA system & work the music. Please let me know ASAP if you or anyone you know would be interested in doing any of these jobs.

The game times are as follows:

• May 23rd: Highlands vs. Bellevue - 5:30pm


• May 24th: Newport vs. Dayton - 4:30pm


• May 24th: Highlands/Bellevue vs. NCC - 6:30pm


• May 25th: Newport/Dayton vs. Highlands/Bellevue/NCC - 5:30pm

We'll need all volunteers to be at the field AT LEAST 30 minutes prior to game time to get set up and make sure everything is working properly. We have scheduled a Varsity round robin on Saturday. It will be the same format as last week:

Saturday - Concession - Important!

We REALLY need parents to volunteer to work the concession on Saturday during our round robin. It would be best if we can just get one or two parents to work each game - that way everyone just has an hour and a half shift. Week of Monday 5/9

There are several changes for this week, so please read ALL of this information.

Monday:

There will be NO JV game at Bellevue. I am hoping to play a Varsity double header but have not heard back from their coach. THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE VARSITY GAME MONDAY. We will wear blue with pants. We'll leave in a school van at 4:15pm. **Bellevue's field is located by their track and football field.**

All JV players that do not regularly dress Varsity need to report to Death Valley on Monday at 3:45pm. The freshman game at home vs. NCC will be a Freshman/JV game rather than just freshman. We have changed this since the JV Bellevue game was cancelled.

Tuesday:

There will be NO JV game on Tuesday. Varsity will play a double header vs. Scott, followed by a game against Newport. Both of these games are at home.

Wednesday/Thursday:

We are not allowed to play Monday-Thursday, so if one of these games does not get rained out, we will cancel Thursday's game.

Friday:

Senior night after the Varsity game.

Saturday:

JV Tournament at Dixie.

We've had several changes to our schedule in the last few days. Scott had to cancel on us for Monday because of conference make up games, and Mount Notre Dame cancelled on us for Tuseday for the same reason. I am now trying to pick up a game on Tuesday or Thursday, and will post information as soon as I have it available.

Varsity Tournament - Friday Schedule

We had the opportunity to pick up another game on Friday night, and with all the rainouts, we decided to take it. Our first game Friday night is now at 6:30pm. We'll need to leave school NO LATER THAN 3:30pm. We are recommending that the team pack a sandwich or something to eat for the car ride down since we probably will not have a chance to stop to eat before we get to the field.

2. International rule goes into effect at the start of the 8th inning or at the end of the time limit
3. No full infield
4. Batting cages by the softball field are open to use along with any nets. Also, the practice football field behind the softball field is open to use. Also, across the street I will open up our indoor hitting facility. (It isn’t very big just two batting cages but better than nothing!)
5. Flip for home team.
6. Madison Central will play in the 3rd base dugout but will also flip for home team.

Thursday 4/21

V/JV will be leaving school at 4pm for Dixie. JV needs to be at Dixie at 6pm if they choose not to ride with the team. We are wearing blue jerseys with pants and blue socks.

Freshman team will leave school at 4:45pm on a bus on Monday for the freshman game. The game starts at 6pm at NCC's Bartlett field. Bartlett field's address is 410 Grandview Ave., Newport, KY. Please use GoogleMaps or MapQuest for directions. All JV/Freshman flex players need to attend the freshman game on Monday as listed on the flex schedule. The uniform is white shirt, blue shorts, and white socks.

JV/V practice is 6pm-8pm on Monday evening. Please bring cleats, gym shoes, and your own water bottle for practice from now on.

Monday

All teams will practice 6-7:30pm on Monday. If it's not raining we will be on the softball field. If it is raining, we will be in the small gym.

If you have not turned athletic fees, socks money or visors money, or candy fundraising money, it needs to be turned in on Monday. Sweats orders & money are due no later than SUNDAY EVENING, the order will be placed on Monday.

Friday Details

Freshman practice is from 5:30-6:30 in the small gym.

JV/V will have a bus and leave from Highlands at 3:45pm to go to Cooper. V/JV players should wear blue jerseys, white pants, and blue socks.

If you have not paid for your socks, visors, or athletic fees yet, please have those turned in to Jessica or Kara on Friday. We will hand out visors and socks to V/JV girls on Friday and to Freshman girls on Saturday.

Sweats orders and money are also due Friday, as well as the candy fundraiser money. Please do not forget to bring both to the scrimmage or to Freshman practice!

Don't forget about our field clean up day on Saturday morning at 8:30!! Again, we could use all the parental help we can get, so if you have some time on Saturday morning we'd really appreciate the help. Concession stand donations can also be brought to the field Saturday morning.

Thursday Uniform

V/JV players need to be at school no later than 4:30 to leave for Ludlow. The team will caravan to the field.

We are wearing blue uniforms with blue shorts.

I will be handing out visors and socks to those who have paid before we leave.

Thursday/Friday Scrimmage

We will leave from school at 4:30 on Thursday for the scrimmage against Ludlow. There will be no bus, but we will be able to fit the team into cars to head down to Ludlow for the scrimmage. The school is located at 515 Elm Street, Ludlow, KY 41016 and the field is right across from the school. Please use Google Maps or Mapquest for directions.

On Friday, there WILL be a bus from school at 3:45 to take the girls to Cooper. Their field is located at their school also, and the school's address is 2855 Longbranch Road, Union, KY 41091. It does take about 35-40 minutes to get to Cooper, so please allow plenty of time to get there if you plan to be there at the start of the scrimmage at 5pm.

Don't forget that money and order forms for sweats are due on Friday, as well as visor/sock money ($30 total - check paid to HHS Softball), and athletic fees ($90 - check paid to HHS Athletics).

Additional Scrimmage & Wednesday Fundraiser

We have added an additional scrimmage next week with Ludlow. We will be playing on Thursday night at 5:30pm at Ludlow. Although the schedule indicates V Only for the Cooper Scrimmage, V/JV players will be required to attend both scrimmages next week.

Wednesday night we will be lining the soccer fields at Pendery Park. We asked the girls to let us know if their parents can come, but please go ahead and shoot me an email at jessica.donelan@yahoo.com if you think you can be there to help out. The more hands we have, the quicker it will go.

Post Parents' Meeting Letter

This will go home with your daughter at practice along with other information, but it's posted here for your reference as well:

Dear Highlands Softball Parent,

If you missed the meeting last night, we’re sorry you couldn’t be there! If you were there, thanks for coming! The following is a recap of what we talked about, as well as some things we’ll need your help with in the coming weeks:

WEBSITE/PARENT COMMUNICATION
-Coaches’ contact information is on the website (www.bluebirdsfastpitch.blogspot.com). Varsity parents need to contact me with questions or concerns, JV parents need to contact Katie, and Freshman parents need to contact Kara.
-Practice schedules and other important information is posted on the website. It is our main form of communicating with parents. PLEASE CHECK IT DAILY!!!
-There is no set practice schedule right now as we are fighting for time on the football field and in the gyms until our field is dry enough to practice on. We will try to set the practice schedule at the beginning of the week. Unfortunately we cannot promise anything until our field is dry.
-We have also set up the one-call system for emergency notifications (e.g. game cancelled due to weather).

COSTS TO EXPECT
-Activity Fee** = $90 – checks made out to Highlands High School
-Visors** = $20 – checks made out to Highlands Softball
-Socks (2 pair)** = $10 – checks made out to Highlands Softball
-Concession stand donation (See attached – please fill out information form and return to me. You are responsible for supplying the particular drink written on this form.)**

-Visor and socks will not be handed out until money is received, and girls will not play if they do not have socks or visors (players with protective masks are not required to purchase visors)

FUNDRAISING
-We are selling boxes of candy. Each player needs to sell one box. They will be sent home with your daughter if you did not attend the parents’ meeting. If you sell a whole box and need more, please let us know and we can get you a second box.
-We are also selling candles this year. You are not required to sell any but we will still be handing out packets in case you have interested buyers.
-We will be lining the soccer fields at Pendery Park next Wednesday at 5pm. Girls will be required to attend. Any parental help we can get would be much appreciated.
-We are selling Split the Pot tickets at the NKY River Monsters Arena Football game at Bank of Kentucky Center. We will need volunteers to sell tickets. The first game is March 18th – more information to come.

MISCELLANEOUS
-If your daughter is participating in an activity outside of Highlands softball, you need to let the coaches know. We will excuse players from practices for other activities, but softball needs to be the priority. There may be consequences for missing practices for other activities. Please do not question the consequences if they do arise, as the consequences may different for different players on different days and for different situations.
-Varsity and JV players need to have the attached medical form filled out and returned to me for overnight trip purposes
-Players are permitted to go on Spring Break, but I need something in writing stating when you are leaving and when you will return. Please turn this in no later than March 18th.
-Freshman uniforms will be handed out as soon as they are received. Freshman teams at Highlands typically use old Varsity jerseys, but we only have old shorts. They will be receiving new jerseys next week sometime.
-We handed out a copy of the player contract that each girl needs to sign. Please review it and let us know if you have any questions.
-Our expectations with regard to discussing playing time are as follows:

• Player needs to approach coach to discuss concerns
• We will discuss concerns with parent once player has approached the coach
• Parent meeting needs to be set up in advance via email so that we can schedule a face to face meeting
• Please do not approach a coach after a game to discuss playing time concerns.
  

This is our first year with a freshman team, so this will be a new experience for everyone involved, including the coaching staff. Please be flexible and willing to work with us. We may ask your daughter who is on the JV team to play in a freshman game every once in a while. We may ask your Varsity daughter to stay and participate in a JV game. We may ask your Freshman daughter to play in a JV game. We do this to ensure that each player is getting the best experience they can out of this season. We want your daughter to get better, to learn the game, and most of all, to have fun!

Friday/Saturday Practice & Parents Meeting

Just a reminder that practice is 5:30-7pm tonight. I am aware of the middle school dance this evening, and will excuse middle schoolers from practice to attend the dance. However, I need to know IN ADVANCE if players will be going to the dance instead of coming to practice.

Practice on Saturday is from 10am-12pm.

Tonight I will be handing out parents letters regarding our parents meeting this season. It will be held on Monday, March 7th at 8pm after practice in the High School Cafeteria. Please let me know if you can not attend.

Monday's practice will be pitchers and catchers only from 6-7pm in the small gym, due to the girls' regional basketball game at 7:30pm. We will resume regular practice on Tuesday with everyone from 6-8pm in the small gym and on the football field.

Also, thinking ahead to the concession stand, there is Gatorade on sale at Kroger through today. If you have a chance to go grocery shopping and could pick up a few large Gatorades to help stock the concession stand, that would be great.

Varsity, JV, and Freshman tryouts will start on February 19th from 10am - 1pm in the small gym at the high school.

You MUST have a physical on file with the nurses office in order to tryout.

Girls who are interested in trying out are highly recommended to attend conditioning on Mondays and/or Thursdays!
